Self : A Self Guinea Pig, is a single colour with a smooth coat.
Crested:
English Crested - Any colour with a crest on its forehead.
American Crested - A Cavy with a crest of a contrasting colour on its forehead
Satin:
The satinsiation is due to the hollow hair shafts in the coat. It gives the most amazing sheen to the coat.
Rex:
A short coated Guinea with a rexoid coat that appears crimped and erect from the body. Rex come in all colours.
Abyssinian:
Abyssinian are a rough coated, short haired Cavy in which a specific arrangements of rosettes, which create ridges. Abys' come in all colours
MARKED
Agouti - is a dark-eyed ticked Guinea. The undercolour, is the base of the hair shaft. The ticking, is tips of the hair. The colour of the ticking should also be the same colour as the belly.
There are 12 breeds in the Agouti group, Golden Agouti, Silver Agouti, Cinnamon Agouti, Orange Agouti, Lemon Agouti, Cream Agouti, Buff Agouti, Pineapple Agouti.
Argente - is similar to an Agouti, but has pink eyes and with either Lilac or Beige undercolour instead of Black or Chocolate.
Eg-Gold Argente, Silver Argente, Saffron & Cream Argente.
Dutch - is a white and coloured Guinea Pig. Areas of colour are defined as a pattern on the cheeks, and entire rear end.
Tortoiseshell and White - 'Tort and White' is a red, black and white coloured Cavy. The colours are in a checker board efect over the body.
Tortoiseshell - red and black coloured Guinea.
Brindle - red and black hairs intermingled all over the body.
Tri-Colour - A three coloured cavy, one being white and any other colours apart from red and black (because that is a Tort and White)
Bi-Colour - is a two coloured cavy, (the colours can not be red and black together because that is a Tortoiseshell)
Dalmation - is a white cavy with coloured markings. The colouration should be on the feet and head, with a white blaze on the face and spots over the body and tummy.
Roan - is a basic coloured cavy with white hairs mixed evenly throughout the body other than a solid coloured head and feet.
Himalayan - is a Pink Eyed White Guinea that develops pigment on its nose (smut), ears and feet (points) during the first few months of its life.
Panda - This is a black skinned Guinea Pig that has a white coat. (Genetically this is a silver Agouti without the black base of the hair)
LONGHAIRS
Sheltie - a smooth haired, long coated cavy that comes in any mixture of colours. The hair on a sheltie is swept back of the face.
Texel - a rexoid haired, long coated cavy that comes in any mixture of colours. Rex coated Sheltie.
Coronet - a smooth haired, long coated cavy that comes in any mixture of colours with a crest on the forehead.
Merino - Like a Rex coated Coronet. Same as before comes in various colours.
Peruvian - long coated cavy with two rosettes on the rump, the placement of these rosettes makes the hair come forward over the face. Same as before various colourations.
Alpaca - long coated rexoid cavy with two rosettes on the rump, the placement of these rosettes makes the hair come forward over the face. Rex Coated Peruvian.
Rare Variety –
Some of the following Guineas have not been given a full show standard so they are shown under Guide Standards and New and Emerging Varieties. Some like the Teddy, Fox and Black & Tan are not even here in New Zealand.
Tweed - a grizzled cavy, (mostly in Chocolate)
Harlequin – patches of colour either cream and black or cream and chocolate with Roaned patches evenly spaces
Magpie – just like the bird these Cavies are black and white but a patched coat with Roaned patches evenly spaces
Belted – smooth coated, solid black with a belt of white circling the body just behind the shoulders, the front legs/feet are also white
Ridgeback – smooth coated again with a pronounced unbroken ridge of hair standing erect along the spine. Can be in any colour.
Teddy – short coated with a rexoid type coat that stands erect from the body, the difference between Teddy and Rex is Teddy is straight, plush hair and Rex is Crimped and harsh
Fox – solid smooth coated with sharply defined white markings around the face, chest and belly. The fox comes in the following colours: Black, Chocolate, Lilac and Beige.
Tan – same as Fox but with Tan markings, they also come in the same colours
Others include – Otter, Sable, Slate, Swiss, Lunkarya, Chinchilla, Martin Sable and Mosaic.
Also 2 hairless varieties Skinny pigs and Baldwins. Baldwins are born with hair but loose it by about a month old.
